The Shrine Highlanders were chartered in the fall of 1959 as a "Scottish Pipe
Band." The band was organized by Scotty Wood and initially met and
practiced at his restaurant on Livernois in Detroit. Scotty was able to bring a
group together who could provide the necessary instruction and dedication to
get a band on the streets in a remarkably short period of time.
The original tartan chosen was the Ancient MacMillan because of the similarity
of the colors adopted by the Shrine.
No prior musical experience is required, nor is Celtic ancestry a necessity. The
band will teach you the instrument of your choice, but it is up to you to invest
the time and effort. Our probationary period tends to be a little more extensive
than some of the other units, but members who continue to advance in
proficiency are put in the flag corp to get time on the street prior to taking the
qualification tests.

In more recent times, the band has adopted the Cameron of Lochiel as their official
Tartan........
